At Compassionate Care Veterinary Hospital of Charlotte, microchipping is one of the many services offered by our veterinary team. If your pet is not yet microchipped, now is a great time to schedule an appointment with our animal hospital.
Specifically, microchipping refers to the process of implanting a small chip (about the size of a grain of rice) under the surface of your pet's skin. This chip is programmed with a unique identification number that is then linked to your personal information (name, phone number, address, etc.). If your pet goes missing and is found without a collar/tags, a microchip scanner can be used to retrieve your contact information so you can be reunited with your pet!
So, what are some of the best reasons to consider microchipping? For starters, consider the fact that microchipped dogs are 30% more likely to return home than non-microchipped dogs, and microchipped cats are 36% more likely to return home than non-microchipped cats! Having your pet microchipped is one of the most effective and easiest steps you can take to increase your chances of being reunited if your pet were ever to go missing.
A lot of times, pet owners assume they don't need to microchip their pet because he or she wears a collar with tags. Unfortunately, when a pet goes missing, he or she often loses that collar/tags when climbing under fences, crawling through brush, or otherwise being out in the wild. With a microchip, you can ensure that your contact information is always attached to your pet.
Wondering what will happen at your pet's microchipping appointment? You might be surprised at how quick and easy the process is! Using a special instrument, our vet in Charlotte will quickly embed the chip under your pet's skin (usually between the shoulder blades); most pets don't even feel or notice this happening.
Once the chip is in place, our veterinarian will link the unique chip number to your personal information by entering it into the database at our animal hospital. This will include your pet's name, your name, your phone number, and your current address. Depending on the brand of the microchip, please be aware that you may still need to register the chip to ensure it is active by contacting the chip company directly. That's all there is to pet microchipping!

I have used Dr Johnson ever since she opened this office and my pets love her to death. She is very caring and does not rush you and always answers your questions in layman's terms. She loves her work along with her associates.
