Nutritional Counseling & Prescription Pet Foods

The vast number of different pet foods on the market can make a persons head spin! Many foods have nutritional information that appears to be legitimate, but buyer beware...they may be feeding you a line! Our staff and doctors love to talk about nutrition and will be happy to discuss with you the best diet for your pet. There are a number of factors that go into choosing the right food for your pet including things such as age, activity, obesity, and ongoing allergies.

In some cases, our companions require a specialized diet to help manage underlying disease. Examples include kidney failure, urinary stones, liver disease, food allergy, diabetes, and obesity. CCVH of Charlotte provides a wide variety of prescription diets (Hill’s, Royal Canin, Purina) that are specifically formulated to help prevent and treat certain conditions. Many diseases we treat have a nutritional component that, when corrected, can help prevent and correct the condition. Since prescription diets have a significantly different composition than standard pet food, they are not always appropriate for healthy animals and there is often no over-the-counter equivalent to them.

Obesity in pets, as in people, is a growing epidemic. An estimated 54% of dogs and cats in the United States are obese. Extra weight puts strain on joints, decreases activity levels, and predisposes animals to serious diseases such as diabetes that will shorten their lifespans. Let our veterinarians have a discussion at your next visit about nutrition and formulate a plan for weight loss success!

There are other ways that nutrition can be used to benefit our patients. Nutritional supplements can also be useful in treating diseases by slowing down their progression and lessening the need for chronic medications.

Some of the nutritional supplements CCVH of Charlotte routinely uses are:

-Dasuquin Advanced– a glucosamine supplement formulated for pets to help treat and prevent osteoarthritis

-Denamarin – a combination of nutraceuticals clinically proven to help detoxify the liver

I have used Dr Johnson ever since she opened this office and my pets love her to death. She is very caring and does not rush you and always answers your questions in layman's terms. She loves her work along with her associates.
