Our pets are living longer than ever thanks to dedicated pet parents and advancements in veterinary medicine. We all wish that our fur babies would be young forever, but for most dogs and cats their senior years start around the ripe old age of 7. In large breed dogs such as Mastiffs and Great Danes, the term "senior citizen" can be used as early as age 5.
Just because a dog or cat has reached a certain age, it is important not to make generalizations or decisions about medical care based solely on that number. Our veterinarians will obtain a thorough history, perform an extensive physical evaluation of each patient, and perform additional testing to learn as much as possible about our older patients. A plan is then created for each individual patient to offer support and treatment where needed.
We advise a complete head-to-toe physical exam every 6 months for senior pets, as well as annual lab work. This will allow us to detect any possible health issues early when they can be easier to treat and managed. It is important to monitor your senior pet's appetite, attitude, family interaction, the ability to get around (up and down stairs and from the floor/beds), and for any new lumps or bumps that may have developed over the years (especially those that are growing/changing).
With preventative care, you will enable your senior pet to live a longer, more comfortable life!

I have used Dr Johnson ever since she opened this office and my pets love her to death. She is very caring and does not rush you and always answers your questions in layman's terms. She loves her work along with her associates.
