Sedation and Anesthesia

Sedation and anesthesia is necessary for a number of reasons including dental procedures, surgical procedures, and some medical procedures that may be painful. In some instances, x-rays also require sedation to prevent movement while a difficult view is obtained, and to prevent discomfort to the pet during positioning. In depth ultrasound exams can take 30-40 minutes and may require biopsies or aspirates. In some instances, we will sedate patients to address any anxiety they may experience during this time, as well as address discomfort with pain medication.

In some cases, patients may be aggressive or fractious and will require sedation for procedures such as a routine well exam or bath. We make every effort to work with each patient and reserve sedation as a last resort in these cases.

Pre-anesthetic lab work and EKG are required on all patients undergoing general anesthesia. These tests will alert our team of any underlying problems not evident on exam, to ensure a safe outcome for all our anesthetized patients. Each patient that undergoes anesthesia or sedation will receive a full head-to-toe exam by a veterinarian the day of their procedure. Your vet will then take the results of the EKG, pre-anesthetic lab work, and exam (weight, age, concurrent medical conditions included) to customize an individualized anesthetic protocol for your pet.

During the procedure, your pet is assigned a caring veterinary nurse that will use modern anesthetic monitoring equipment to continuously assess them while their procedure is being completed. This includes monitoring heart rate and rhythm (EKG), blood pressure, temperature, respiratory rate, pulse rate, and depth of anesthesia.

As in human medicine, all anesthesia carries an inherent risk for complication, but at CCVH of Charlotte, we take all necessary steps to ensure a safe outcome for your companion.

I have used Dr Johnson ever since she opened this office and my pets love her to death. She is very caring and does not rush you and always answers your questions in layman's terms. She loves her work along with her associates.
